Hiking poles come in handy. You will be climbing some rocks, you DON'T want to put your hands down. hahah REASON: the bathrooms are "holes" in the ground. That is a good bathroom, not the woods. Let's just say, people MISS the hole. Your shoes are IN that, as you walk, your feet take that with you...... so do 10000 others......now you know why I say take poles and don't put your hands down. :D
Things around Cusco
First go Municipalidad De Cusco, here you can pick up this:
Back side
As you see it has your name on it, you can't transfer it to anyone. By buying this it's cheaper than if you visit these places all separate. I don't remember the cost of this. But worth looking into, if you are wanting to visit a lot of these places.
This is the address you will find it.
Inca Trail:
Climbing the Inca trail was a great adventure. First, it was my first time out of the USA, beside Canada, second; my first time seeing Peru and third; the first time I had ever climbed that high.
Check with your Dr on what shot you will need. This all depends on where all you are going in Peru.
Llama Path was the company my sister and I used. They were great. Sis did a good job on picking the best. They take care of their porters, and US. I HIGHLY recommend them.
Llama Path and I recommend that you arrive in Cusco a few days early to acclimate to the altitude. I did have a headache the first day, but drank a lot of water and then I was fine. Bring Midol, Pepto Bismol or Tums... Never drink their water, unless boiled. Use bottled water. Don't eat the veggies, or things that can't be cooked.
When you first get into Cusco, go check in with whatever group you are hiking with. YES, you have to use a group. These are booked well ahead of time. We booked ours in February, for our hike in August.
Pay the last portion of your trip, bring cash. You will have a group meeting the night before you leave. They will tell you want time to meet the next day and where. Plus you get to meet the others that you will be hiking with.
Llama Path meets at 4 am at the Regocijo Square. Taking a bus to the starting point. You will stop for breakfast, again bring cash.
Bring cash along the trail:
You will be tipping your porters, guides, and the cook the last day. This can be American dollars. You do not need ones, like some website suggest. There will be one day were you tip.
A roll of toilet paper
Mid sized quick dry towel
hand sanitizer
meds
bug spray
head lamp, the last day you get up before the sun, to watch it rise over Machu Picchu
sunglasses
hat
sunscreen
tooth brush and paste
sandals to put on after you take off your boots at camp
clothing NOT cotton
The last day there is a place to shower I went to go use it, NOPE, it was COLD! Plus no place to put your clothes.
I brought my own sleeping bag and pad. You can use theirs if you want.
ICE - In Case of Emergency a list of who to call in case you get hurt. Also list what meds you are on and what you are allergic to.
Snacks, if you want some while on the trail. But I can tell you, Llama Path leaves out snacks for you in the mornings., and they feed you well!!
Chargers for your iphone or electronics
Hydro Seal, this stuff works great for blisters. DON'T wait until it's a full blown blister, treat it while it's still a hot spot.
Rain jacket NOT a poncho, these you can trip on going up the rocks.
Hiking poles
Now for the pictures, they do better at "talking" than I do. Enjoy, there are a lot of them.
